Adrian
Reyes-Prieto
Associate Professor
I am a biologist that became interested in organelle evolution and endosymbiosis since my early undergraduate student days. After finishing my Ph.D. studies in Mexico City, where I was born, I have been progressively migrating up to the North of the continent chasing algae and their plastids. Besides my research activities I am part of theaching teams involved in several course of the UNB Biology program.
Rossella
Calvaruso
Ph.D. Student
I am a phycologist and my interest in algae began when I was an undergraduate student in Sicily, where I graduated in Marine Biology in 2010. After my masters a strange turn of fate brought me to Canada for my Ph.D. working on glaucophytes!
Cecilio
Valadez-Cano
Postdoctoral Researcher
I am biologist and finished my Ph.D. in Biological Science in 2017. I specialize in computational modelling of microbial metabolism.
I am especially interested in the evolutionary study of metabolic capabilities of mutualistic bacterial endosymbionts and photosynthetic organelles.
Eke
Kalu
M.Sc. Student
Originally from Nigeria, I received by Bachelor of Science in Biology from UNB in 2020 where I specialized in cell and molecular biology, and marine biology. As a master's student in the Reyes-Prieto lab, I investigate how microbial communities in Bay of Fundy mudflats respond to various forms of environmental perturbations.

PAST LAB MEMBERS
Jasmine
Chong
Jasmine was my first student. After helping me to set my lab during my first days at UNB, Jasmine defended successfully her Honours thesis in 2013. Then, Jasmine finished both a M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Epidemiology at McGill University.
Alexandra DeShaw
Alex was part of my research groups as Honours and M.Sc, student working with colourless Chlamydomonales. Alex concluded her M.Sc. work in 2021 and currently we are preparing two manuscripts derived from her thesis work.
Giselle
Kan
Cristopher
Jackson
Chris was part of our team from 2012 to 2014. He produced large amounts of sequence data that we are still working on! More papers are coming. Currently, Chris is a Research Scientist at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Melbourne, Australia.
Meagan
Hicks
Francisco Figueroa
Paco joined the lab in 2012. After three years with us he came back to Mexico City to work as Posdoctoral Researcher at the Autonomos Metropolitan Univeristy. We are still working together in some papers to come!
Roger
Silva
Meagan came to our lab in 2014 to complete her thesis in Biology. In 2015 Meagan graduated presenting her comparative study about meiosis and sexual reproduction in diverse groups of algae.
Susan Clayden
Sarah
Russell
Sarah worked with glaucophytes for several years in my research group. In 2019, Sarah finished a M.H. Sc. in Medical Genomics (University of Toronto).
